Norwegian Cruise Line Introduces Upgrade Advantage

July 26, 2017 Cruise Deals No Comments Email Email

In a move designed to boost occupancy and deliver an enhanced onboard experience for its guests, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) in Australia and New Zealand is offering selected guests the opportunity to bid for stateroom upgrades before setting sail through its new automated Upgrade Advantage Program.

“This program benefits guests and our valued travel partners,” explained Steve Odell, Senior Vice President & Managing Director Asia Pacific at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. “Guests will enjoy more flexibility and the opportunity to upgrade at a lower cost than usual and travel agents will earn commission on the upgrade value.”

How it works

Once invited by NCL, guests keen to participate will be able to choose how much they would like to bid for  available options in the one or two meta categories above their booked stateroom.  For example, guests with an Ocean View Stateroom booking can seek an upgrade to a Balcony Stateroom or Mini-Suite.

Guests can then view their tentative bids on a scale that recommends how strongly they should bid to secure the upgrade.   Guests are notified any time up to at least two days before their sail date whether an offer has been accepted. If it has, their payment will be processed and when they log into My NCL they will see their new stateroom number. Unsuccessful bids will be notified within the same time frame, in which case a guest’s original stateroom details will remain unchanged.

The Upgrade Advantage Program uses analytical software which anticipates sailings with higher availability (such as during off-peak seasons), automatically sending an invitation email to qualifying guests only. Exclusions include those who have not paid in full, those booked under certain promotions (including travel agent rates) and Charters, Meetings & Incentives (CM&I) bookings.

Direct booking guests will be contacted via email by NCL, travel agent bookings will receive an email both to the client and the agency, with agencies able to opt out of the program at their own discretion, in which case their booked guests will not receive bid invitations.

The cost of any successful upgrade bid is in addition to the cost of the original reservation. Currently the Upgrade Advantage Program is live with reservations aboard Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Epic, Pride of America, Norwegian Star, Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Pearl, and Norwegian JadeNorwegian Spirit, Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Sky, followed by Norwegian Bliss from January 2018.
