Rummin’ Tings – Choka & Dahl Puri RotiEverything Irie? Kick your shoes off and get set to chill at Hong Kong’s very first Caribbean inspired bar and restaurant, Rummin’ Tings. Oozing chilled vibes and island charm, this carefree escape in the midst of Central’s hustle and bustle is now open, bringing a taste of the Caribbean to Hong Kong’s Hollywood Road.

This SoHo spot serves Chef Bwoy Kris Olbrich’s Caribbean inspired street food, with predominant influences from Trinidad and Jamaica, in addition to other West Indian islands. Kris grew up with the cuisine in a West Indian area of Brooklyn and spent years in the Caribbean as a chef. Signature dishes include Jamrock Jerk Chicken (HK$80) spicy grilled chicken with tamarind aioli, Dutty Doubles (HK$50) tasty chick pea curry and bara (flat fried bread), Conch Salad (HK$80) conch, tiger prawns, thyme, jicama and crispy shallots, Jamaican Beef Patties (HK$60), spiced ground beef, thyme, pepper, Cook Up Stew (HK$120), stewed oxtail, carrots, rice & peas,  and Choka & Dahl Puri Roti (HK$70), grilled eggplant-tomato dip served with roti. Guests may choose from the variety of homemade sauces that add to the flavour and spice to accompany their food. Plates are bar bites meant for sharing. During the day Rummin’ Tings, guests may come by Rummin’ Tings for lunch and an offering of fresh juices, while the space transitions into a casual hang out as the evening draws closer.

Rummin’ Tings serves up a variety of stellar hand crafted rum cocktails in addition to Caribbean classics created by Bar Manager Gurung Amrit Kumar and Bartenders Jack Byrne and Limbu Gme. Must-try cocktails include Passionate Buttah (HK$100) made with cinnamon & butter infused Brugal Extra Dry Rum, passion fruit, lime and basil, Stinga Punch (HK$ 100) a concoction of Bacardi Dark Rum, Wray & Nephew Rum, homemade banana syrup, pineapple juice and ginger beer, Coco Libre (HK$90) a blend of Gosling Black Seal Rum, Chamarel coconut Liquer and fresh coconut water, amongst other potions.  Also available at the bar are a selection of frozen drinks, pitchers of potent punches, beer and wine.

This modern shack is designed by Candace Campos of ID, Interiors & Identity Design. The space is bright and open, maximising mingling through the venue. Seating is all high tops, conducive to a bar environment. Post-cocktail time the string ceiling lights are dimmed, transporting guests to the beach shack vibe of the islands. Bright island colours, materials and art have been used to make for a vibrant surrounding. London based artist Jay Caes flew in to populate the walls with his typography and graphic art work. The glass-enclosed kitchen allows for one to enjoy watching the Chefs in action whist indulging in the pirate way of life.

This is poised to be the destination for the best of eating, drinking, and an all-around Rummin’ experience.
