It has been my dream for a very long time to get really up close and personal with a real live volcano and my fantastic prize winner trip to Vanuatu, fulfilled that dream as I was able to visit the amazing island of Tanna, home of the stunning live volcano, Mount Yasur!
With this really a once in a lifetime experience to able to get this close to a live volcano, it is no easy feat getting there, as there are no sealed roads currently on Tanna Island, although this will be changing in the near future making this tour more accessible.
The bumpy 2 hour drive to Mount Yasur, passed through coffee plantations, villages and farms and we even enjoyed a short stop at a village where local children greeted us with traditional songs and native flowers.
We even travelled through the moonscape at the base of Mt Yasur and after a short, sharp climb up the path I was there, fulfilling my dream, peering into the volcano!
Let me say that nothing can prepare you for this experience, virtually no safety fences or safety features, just the bubbling mass of molten lava in the caldron far below and the huge explosions, when massive glowing boulders are hurled into the air!
As night fell, I could see the red glow of volcanic eruptions more intensely, hearing and feeling the massive and amazing power of nature, an incredible experience, which you just have to try and experience.
More stories to come from Jodie from Vanuatu and Tanna over the coming weeks, so watch out for my Vanuatu and Tanna adventures!
