Western Sydney’s visitor economy is set for another boost, with the nation’s best rowers returning to Penrith in 2020 for the Sydney International Rowing Regatta as part of the NSW Government’s continued investment in Western Sydney.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said the NSW Government is committed to building a world-class calendar of events to drive visitation to our State and ensure we keep breaking new ground and remain Australia’s number one tourist destination.
“We know that sporting events like the Sydney International Rowing Regatta brings not only competitors but officials, coaches, volunteers and spectators to our city, putting heads on beds and filling our local shops – proof of the importance of major events in supporting our tourism industry and the economy,” Mr Marshall said.
Minister for Western Sydney, Minister for Sport and Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said re-securing the Regatta demonstrates the NSW Government’s commitment to ensuring a stellar line-up of sporting events in Western Sydney.
“This is a win for the people of Western Sydney and I am thrilled Australia’s premier rowing event will remain at the home of adrenaline and outdoor adventure in Penrith next year,” Mr Ayres said.
“Over the last six events the event has attracted more than 100,000 attendees from around Australia and across the globe and generated tens of millions of dollars in overnight visitor expenditure for the State.”
The Sydney International Rowing Regatta is part of a packed sporting events calendar for Western Sydney over the next two years, with the 2019 Rugby League Nines World Cup, the ATP Team World Cup, FIH Pro League, NRL Grand Final, Nepean Triathlon and Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney and many more.
Rowing Australia Chairman, Rob Scott said he was delighted for the event to continue to utilise the world-class facility of SIRC, a legacy venue from the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, especially in the lead up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“Today’s announcement represents the continued support from the NSW Government for Rowing Australia and Australian rowing in general. With SIRR 2019 just a few weeks away, I would like to extend my gratitude to the NSW Government and Destination NSW for their ongoing commitment to our sport.
“We’re thrilled that the 2020 event will be hosted in Penrith and our 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls will be able to race, alongside the Schools Championships, on the superb course in Penrith. We look forward to welcoming the rowing community to Penrith next month and next year.”
The Sydney International Rowing Regatta features a week long regatta with the nation’s best rowers competing in over 100 events. This includes the Australian Open Rowing Championships, Australian Open Schools Rowing Championships and the King’s and Queen’s Cups Interstate Regatta where athletes from across the country compete to be crowned the best in the country in their respective boat classes.
