New South Wales has come out on top of the 2018 Australia’s Top Restaurant Awards, boasting the majority of representation in the Top 10 and Top 100 categories as well as Australia’s Top Chef.
Now in its fourth year, the annual Awards presented by The Australian Financial Review, were held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales last night and named six of the country’s Top 10 restaurants from NSW including:
- #2 – Ester, Sydney, NSW
- #3 – Saint Peter, Sydney NSW
- #6 – Momofuku Seiobo, Sydney, NSW
- #7 – Sixpenny, Sydney, NSW
- #9 – Sepia, Sydney, NSW
- #10 – Fleet, Brunswick Heads, NSW
NSW also claimed 41 restaurants in the Top 100, more than any other State and ten more than nearest rival, Victoria.
Chef Josh Niland of Saint Peter in Sydney was named Australia’s Top Chef for his vision and passion.
In a new award for the event, another Sydney based restaurant, Firedoor, took out the inaugural Rare Medium Award presented by Meat & Livestock Australia, for setting new standards of excellence in red meat cookery.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall congratulated the winners and said the recognition was a testament to the calibre of restaurants available to locals and visitors to NSW.
“Visitors come to our State for a unique and memorable experience – the outstanding local food, wine, beer and spirits on offer in NSW and the great service are central to that exceptional experience,” Mr Marshall said.
“We’re extremely lucky in NSW to be home to an amazing variety of fresh produce, quality venues and inspiring chefs,” he said.
“To have NSW as the stand out State in this year’s Australia’s Top Restaurant Awards helps to showcase our diverse offering and gives people even more reason to pay us a visit.”
Australia’s Top 100 Restaurants are chosen by Australia’s top chefs and restaurateurs from an overall list of 500 restaurants compiled by The Financial Review’s top critics and editors. It’s the ultimate chefs’ guide on where to eat from the country’s best fine dining restaurants and laneway bars to coastal getaways and hidden treasures.
