NT Tourism chief Tony Mayell sacked following Labor Party win

egtmedia59Northern Territory Tourism chief executive Tony Mayell is one of four key executives sacked following a reorganisation after the recent election won by the Labor Party. It’s expected the $5 million in savings will be made up by the loss of salaries and other restructures. An additional $10 million will be made up of an expected 100 position losses over the next year through attrition and restructuring, the Government said. The major departments will now be grouped together into four “clusters”, including Chief Minister, Children and Families, Development and Tourism, and Environment and Culture. Michael Tennant will now be the lead CEO for all the portfolios across the Development spectrum, Ken Davies will leave Education to head up Children and Families, Alastair Shields will lead Tourism, Environment and Culture, and former under-treasurer Jodie Ryan will lead the Chief Minister department until a suitable replacement can be found, expected at the end of the year. Tourism is a major contributor to the economy in the NT and it is hard to imagine how it will continue to grow without leadership from someone with Mayell’s experience. The dollars saved in the short term will surely come back to haunt the government as the industry falters.
