The Sultanate of Oman’s most visited national monument is closed for maintenance until 30 September 2015.
Oman’s Ministry of Culture and Heritage, and the Ministry of Tourism have announced the temporary closure of monumental Nizwa Fort for essential, scheduled maintenance works.
“Nizwa Fort is a remarkable architectural treasure, and has been for centuries”, says Mona Tannous – Country Manager Sultanate of Oman Tourism Australia/New Zealand.
“It was constructed in the 1650s, but its underlying structure dates right back to the 12th Century. So, as you might imagine, occasional maintenance is required to ensure it can be explored and enjoyed by visitors for decades to come. Visitors to Nizwa during this period will of course be able to explore the city’s wonderful souq and view the fort’s imposing exterior”, continues Ms Tannous, “and the stunning forts in towns like Bahla, Nakhal and even Muscat provide great alternatives for history buffs.”
Nizwa Fort is scheduled to re-open to visitors on 01 October, 2015.
