Demonstrating responsible development in its finest form, Omran’s first project in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, the Alila Jabal Akhdar Resort, was recently named as the country’s ‘Sustainable Project of the Year’ and ‘Hospitality Project of the Year’ by ConstructionWeekOnline.Com’s 3rd Construction Week Oman Awards.

The prestigious accolades recognised the soon to be open Alila Jabal Akhdar Resort for exhibiting construction best practices, exemplary safety measures, innovative use of construction technology and techniques and incorporating sustainable, eco-friendly Alila Interior Poodesign and construction methods that go beyond the norm.

“We are honoured to receive these regionally-recognised awards that further cement our position as the country’s leading development company and the region’s most responsible developer,” said Eng. Nasser Al Maqbali, Omran’s Chief Operations Officer. “Through constant collaboration with our contractors, suppliers and partners, we were successfully able to overcome the rugged landscape’s challenges and bring a complex, unique and much anticipated project like this to fruition ahead of time and within budget in one of Oman’s most picturesque locations.”

Al Maqbali also said that the design, location, construction technologies and materials used in the Alila Jabal Akhdar Resort project have all contributed to its uniqueness. He also stated that the resort has incorporated numerous elements that meet the criteria set by the US Green Building Council for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold accreditation. He explained with a few examples, “Due to the secluded location of the resort and the importance of available water resources for the local community, we designed an onsite Sewage Treatment Plant to process and recycle water from every potential source of water wastage, utilised gravel, paving and stone retrieved during excavation in construction and planted native plant species, accustomed to the climate and soil conditions of Al Jabal Al Akhdar throughout the site. This project has once again translated Omran’s commitment to creating memorable destinations in full harmony with the natural environment.”

Alila Jabal Akhdar Resort has been created with a deliberate attempt to maximise the use of local materials and minimise the energy footprint. The external skin is formed using non load-bearing stone masonry walls while the internal skin is made up of lightweight Alila Exteriorplasterboard walls. Solar panels on site also contribute 8% of the required energy, providing a renewable energy source for the project.

Alila Jabal Akhdar Resort is due to open in April 2014 and will feature 86 suites of varied categories and spaces, a first of its kind Omani spa, meeting facilities, restaurants as well as indoor and outdoor swimming pools. The resort offers tourists and visitors an uninterrupted view of the stunning Al Hajjar Mountain range and canyons and has already been honoured for its break through design in the Best Project Design category at the Dossier Construction Awards and Summit 2013.

The Construction Week Oman Awards celebrates the strength of the construction industry in Oman and recognises the talent of those working in the sector. This year’s awards saw a record number of high calibre entries in the event’s three year history. Winners are selected from a shortlist of candidates by a panel of eleven judges made up of senior management and project directors from within the construction sector.
