One of the most important historic houses in Australia, the 187-year old Camden Park House, only opens to the public once each year – the rest of the time it is inhabited by the descendants of pioneers John and Elizabeth Macarthur – the original owners after whom the Macarthur region is named.

The annual opening weekend will take place during the Camden Festival on September 22-23, 2018, with more than 2000 visitors from Sydney and further afield expected to tour the beautifully preserved Georgian mansion. Guests can also enjoy the colonial garden with its spring blossoms and rare botanical plants, as well as enjoying a Devonshire tea or BBQ lunch on the lawn overlooking the region’s green hills and dales.

Designed by colonial architect John Verge, Camden Park House has now been home to seven generations of John and Elizabeth Macarthur’s descendants. The extensive, 80-room mansion is largely furnished with period pieces, and Verge’s striking Palladian design has stood the test of time, with the house remaining today largely as it was built. The building is significant both architecturally and historically – with the larger Camden Park property being instrumental to the birth of the Australian wool and agriculture industries.

To allow all visitors to enjoy their house inspection and to limit the strain placed on the house, entry numbers are limited and tours will take place on the hour. Tickets may be reserved in advance or purchased on the day. Camden Park House will be open from 12pm to 4pm on Saturday, September 22, 2018, and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, September 22, 2018. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $15 for concession or $50 for families (two adults and up to three children).

The opening will take place as part of the Camden Festival, alongside a host of other events including Cinema Under the Stars, Picnic in the Park, and TASTE Food, Wine and Music Festival.
