Top 20 Canadian finalists in the prestigious Royal Canadian Geographical Society’s Canadian Geographic Challenge were announced earlier this week. Two BC Teens will be joining other Canadian students in the event and ramping up their studies to compete for the title of National Champion taking place in Ottawa, from June 3 to 5. These geography whizzes, ranging from Grade 7 to 10, will be faced with a variety of trivia and multiple-choice questions, as well as video questions from guest star geographers and explorers.

The Squamish based Polar cruise specialist, One Ocean Expeditions (OOE) who have been operating expeditions cruises in polar regions and Canada’s Atlantic Coast for two decades is honored to support its exclusive partner, The Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) in this rewarding educational initiative.  Both organizations are commitment to increase youth’s interest and knowledge of Canada’s rich history and geography. “There is no better way for kids to learn and appreciate their country than exploring it first hand”, says Andrew Prossin, Executive Director at One Ocean Expeditions. “The nature of the voyages we operate truly immerse travellers in the destination we visit, so when we proposed the RCGS to donate complimentary berths on the “Fins and Fiddles” cruise to the finalists, they jumped on the opportunity as it perfectly aligns with their mandate. We know from our experience hosting families on our voyages that kids benefit tremendously from the experience”, added Prossin.

One student will be named National Champion, but each of the finalists will receive a berth on One Ocean Expeditions’  10-night “Fins and Fiddles” adventure cruise a select member of Destination Canada ‘s Canadian Signature Experiences Collection. This voyage explores the geographic features of Canada’s East Coast and one of its key highlights includes a zodiac excursion to Sable Island and its famed wild horses. The top three contestants will also receive prizes of, respectively, $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000.

The RCGS announced that Canadian Space Agency astronaut David Saint-Jacques the next scheduled to go to space in November 2018 will host the June 4th final competition in Ottawa. According to the RCGS, David Saint-Jacques will give a brief presentation about his training to the audience and then guide the top five finalists through the competition final round to name a National Champion.  Andrew Prossin, OOE’s Executive Director will attend the event to share further information on OEE’s Polar expedition cruises to the Arctic and Antarctic.

The Trebek Family Foundation, One Ocean Expeditions, Canadian North Airlines, Canadian Space Agency, the Canadian War Museum, and the Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) are the proud supporters of the Canadian Geographic Challenge. The Challenge is just one of the ways Canadian Geographic Education is helping to foster the geographic skills necessary to maintain Canada’s reputation as a geography powerhouse.  The Challenge will air across Canada on CPAC at a later date, so stay tuned.
