Operator Demystifies The Arctic Cruise Experience

May 30, 2017 Cruise No Comments Email Email

These past years polar tourism has gained popularity, particularly in the Arctic. The increase in destination awareness and responsible tourism, operators such as One Ocean Expeditions (OOE) have provided across the Arctic, is surely one of the reasons. Could it also be that a trend has developed for travellers that have “done it all”, or those desiring to travel to lesser-known destinations, or potentially both?

OOE is committed to help cruise devotees demystify the Arctic whilst ensuring they understand the ‘what, when, why and how’ during exploration of this uniquely remote part of the world. Visiting small coastal communities and exploring iceberg-laden bays for polar bear, can be one of the most rewarding travel experiences left in the world.

With two decades of expertise operating expedition cruises in the Canadian Arctic and Spitsbergen (Svalbard archipelago) OOE knows a thing or two about this incredibly diverse destination and the intricacies and misconceptions of Arctic cruising. “As we are about to begin the 2017 Norwegian Arctic cruise season we see value in educating and enticing more cruise enthusiasts to discover Svalbard. This fantastic cruise destination is familiar to Europeans and surprisingly still relatively unknown to North Americans and Australians”, says Catherine Lawton General Manager at OOE. ” It’s more than time for others to experience Spitsbergen and explore the other side of the north, above 80’North latitude,” added Lawton.

Why the Norwegian High Arctic? That’s where the Arctic opens up, in early June as warmer temperatures allow for coastal access, daylight increases and ice slowly melts creating a perfect environment for wildlife to come to life from the long and dark winter. The Svalbard shoreline boasts stunning glaciers, spectacular fjords and scenic mountains, combined with a plethora of birds, including puffins and wildlife- like beluga whales, seals and the mighty polar bear, as well as iconic reindeer. In essence, that is what gives the Norwegian Arctic all the ingredients for a memorable cruising adventure, especially for nature lovers, birders and amateur photographers.

The midnight sun and extended hours of daylight enable guests to pack in a wide variety of excursions compared to non-polar destinations. Focusing on the western and northern coasts of Spitsbergen, which house the highest concentration of wildlife, places of historic and scenic interest as well surprising lush vegetation. The entire archipelago of Svalbard is a lesson in glaciology and OOE’s onboard experts readily share their knowledge during hikes and zodiac cruises to explain the formation of this fantastic landscape. OOE’s cruise itineraries include hikes, zodiac cruises and visits to impressive seabird colonies. Daily seminars ranging from history, geology to marine biology and photography take place on all voyages.

OOE’s Director of Operations and mastermind behind the expedition cruise itineraries, Aaron Lawton says, “our voyages benefit from having dedicated naturalists wildlife spotting at all times. We have a very high success rate in spotting these kings of the Arctic (polar bear) and we’re able to maneuver the ship into prime position for the best viewing opportunities.’

For a limited time, OOE is offering a US $1000 travel credit for guests on these soft adventures cruises in the Norwegian High Arctic.  Thespecial offer, which is available for all new bookings confirmed by May 31, 2017 on Spitsbergen voyages departing in summer 2018are designed to help offset the cost of travel to Longyearbyen (via Oslo), from where the ship departs.

Prices for the nine-night Spitsbergen Encounter, Photographic Symposium departing on June 19, 2018 & a traditional Spitsbergen Encounter departing June 28-July 7, 2018 starts from US$4695pp triple share and from US$7195 based on twin private (including the US$1000 travel credit).
