The prestigious Otahuna Lodge in Tai Tapu, Canterbury has been voted no. 1 in the world’s Top 20 International Hideaways in the United States’ most influential luxury travel reader’s poll, Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report.
The seven-suite Lodge gained 1st place in the annual Reader’s Choice Survey for 2015. Otahuna Lodge was also voted the 14th bestFood and Wine Resort in the world. Andrew Harper, in the 35th year of running this report, awarded 122 properties in 51 countries. Otahuna was joined by one other New Zealand property, The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs which also featured on the Hideaway list, ranked at no. 19.
The award comes as Otahuna Lodge prepares to release their first book, later this month. For the love of a place: the stories and cuisine of Otahuna is a treasure-trove of stories dating from when the Lodge was first built in 1895 to its present day iteration as one of the world’s leading luxury hotels. Written by the current owners, Hall Cannon and Miles Refo with Simon Farrell-Green it is as much a book for gardening enthusiasts and history fiends as it is for foodies. While the first 100 of 288 pages tell the stories of one of New Zealand’s grandest homes, the remainder is devoted to the cuisine for which Otahuna has been internationally recognised.
Just 25 minutes’ drive from Christchurch on New Zealand’s South Island, Otahuna is an exquisitely renovated mansion that now caters to the most discerning travellers. It is an ideal place from which to explore Canterbury’s extraordinary scenery, from the spectacular Banks Peninsula to the majestic Southern Alps. Suites start at $600NZ a night per person in low season. Tariffs include breakfast, all drinks and nightly five-course degustation dinners with matching New Zealand wines created by renowned Executive Chef Jimmy McIntyre.
The win was a “stunning confirmation for a fantastic team that works harder than anyone to show off the wonders of Canterbury,” says Hall Cannon.
“Americans in particular are absolutely in love with New Zealand and this latest listing confirms for us that we are providing a destination that leaves a great, lasting impression in travellers’ minds.”
