Outback Pioneers (previously Kinnon & Co) won the Gold Award for Cultural Tourism at the 2017 Queensland Tourism Awards, held in Brisbane on 10 November. This is the second year running the company has won the prestigious award.

The Kinnon family’s Kinnon & Co Outback Accommodation also won the Bronze Award for Self-contained Accommodation.

These awards help cement Longreach and Outback Queensland as one of Queensland’s must-do tourist destinations – the third great attraction alongside reef and rainforest.

Owner and founder of Outback Pioneers, Richard Kinnon said that since the company rebranded as Outback Pioneers in 2016, they have been working even harder to establish Longreach as the centre of outback pioneering experiences and somewhere visitors can really discover their own pioneering spirit.

“The outback pioneering culture is part of our heritage and the outback pioneering spirit is part of our national character,” Richard said.

“This is the iconic outback Australia of stockmen, sheep shearers, graziers and the men and women who brought (and still bring) courage, ingenuity and humour to a remote lifestyle.

“It inspires us and we want it to inspire our visitors,” Richard said.

The company’s Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience, Starlight’s Cruise Experience, Nogo Station Experience and Winton Discovery Experience all feature authentic glimpses into outback life past and present, with plenty of quirky touches and laughs along the way.

The Kinnon & Co Outback Accommodation, which features a range of different options, including the deluxe 4½-star Homestead Stables and 4-star Pioneer Slab Huts, also shows the Kinnons’ passion for outback heritage and their desire to immerse visitors in a genuine and unique outback experience.

The entire Outback Accommodation complex is inspired by outback heritage and the deluxe options have been custom-built using traditional techniques, unique fittings and local crafts. Guests in the deluxe accommodation also enjoy the wonderful outdoor bath terrace, which has become an iconic image of the region.

The family also invites visitors to their The Station Store outback emporium and the beautifully restored The Welcome Home café and tearoom in the heritage heart of Longreach.

Richard Kinnon also congratulated the other outback companies that were recognised at the Queensland Tourism Awards.

“Together we are creating a world-class tourism destination that every Australian and every overseas visitor should experience,” Richard said.

The Outback Pioneers experiences and Kinnon & Co Outback Accommodation have together welcomed around 25,000 visitors in the 2017 season. It’s an outback success story helping support a region that has been doing it tough through years of drought.
