British Columbia’s leading sailing operator, Outer Shores Expeditions, is embracing the spirit of exploration in 2016.
From the introduction of the innovative In The Wake of Captain James Cook sailings to the immersive Haida Gwaii Archipelago – Islands at the Edge itineraries, Outer Shores provides modern explorers the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the Pacific Coast’s great explorers.
From April to October 2016, guests tap into their own spirit of exploration as they step aboard the majestic classic wooden schooner Passing Cloud. Whether assisting the crew in hitching ropes as the salty sea winds blow or settling into the warm glow of the exquisite main salon to pour over the rich collection of nautical charts alongside Captain Markel, Outer Shores guests aren’t simply coming along for the ride, they are living the expedition.
“Our guests discover when they sail with us they get to live the explorer’s experience,” explains Russell Markel, Captain and Founder, Outer Shores Expeditions. “They are on a classic wooden schooner experiencing unspoiled territory with modern civilization left in their wake. It really gives us all a chance to chase adventure.”
The spirit of exploration is an integral part Canada’s Pacific Coast history. Scientists believe the Haida Gwaii Archipelago may very well represent the first place in all of North America on which humans set foot some tens of thousands of years ago. Meanwhile, Captain Cook’s 18th century arrival would forever change the Pacific Coast, a journey Outer Shores is exploring for the first time in 2016.
“Explorers of all eras have been driven by the desire to discover and experience things others might never even imagine as possible,” notes Markel. “There are very few places left on the face of the earth where you get to leave the day-to-day behind as the tides, winds, and wildlife take over. We’re very fortunate to operate in an environment that provides all of that in abundance.”
When Outer Shores’ guests follow-up their hearty breakfasts and fresh brewed coffee by excitedly slipping into their rubber boots to step away from the comfort of the ship into the waiting zodiac, they are inviting another unparalleled experience into their lives. Whether it’s an insightful exchange with the legendary Haida Watchmen, spotting a humpback whale breaching off the bow, or opening their eyes to the brilliantly coloured living world that reveals itself and then hides away again with the tides, there is simply no shortage of discovery during Outer Shores’ expeditions.
The 2016 season will kick-off on April 12, 2016 for the first of five six-day expeditions exploring the ancient worlds and west coast wilderness of Pacific Rim National Park, before Outer Shores debuts their In The Wake of Captain James Cook expeditions in May, then it’s on to Haida Gwaii Archipelago in June and July, the new Canada’s Great Bear Sea sailing in August, followed by theGreat Bear Rainforest in September and a season concluding adventure throughout Gulf Islands National Park in October.
