I have to admit the only time I have heard the word “bitsy” was in an early 60’s song and you have to have a bit of age on to appreciate this story angle.
Remember the Bryan Highland version of Itsy BitsyTeenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, circa 1960? The rather tenuous link to this story is not the Itsy bitsy bikini but the Christian name of Bitsy Kelley a leading light in the third generation of Kelley’s owners and founders of the Outrigger Hotels and resorts group. Bitsy is really a variant of Elizabeth.
Hawaii-based Outrigger Enterprises Group is one of the fastest-growing, privately-held hospitality companies in the Asia Pacific, Oceania and Indian Ocean regions. The company operates and is developing properties in eight nations and is actively exploring management opportunities in regions worldwide. A new property will come on line in the Maldives in August this year and bookings are now loaded in the system.
Outrigger Enterprises Group currently manages or has under development 45 properties with approximately 11,000 rooms in some of the world’s most desired beach destinations in Hawaii, Australia, Fiji, Guam, Thailand, Mauritius, China and Vietnam. These operations total over US$519 million in annual revenue.
An entrepreneurial outlook and sound business practices have driven the successful growth of Outrigger Enterprises Group. Pioneering founders Roy and Estelle Kelley transformed leisure vacationing in Hawaii and Roy Kelley has often been referred to as the “Father of Hawaii’s Modern Tourism.”
A recent career change from Television and radio presenter to Communications guru for the family owned group, Bitsy along with other family members, is navigating a new direction for the company on the buying trail for properties which suit the Outrigger model and have embarked on a global buying spree to purchase and build properties with close beach access.
The company is divesting itself of properties without a beachfront resulting in the recent sale of four Australian properties to the Mantra Group.
Bitsy’s grandfather, Roy, started the company leaving the US mainland with his family to settle in Hawaii in 1929. 68 years later they have amassed a huge variety of Hotels, resorts and are on the prowl for more.
Bitsy fronted a popular television show “Outdoor GPS” on Comcast and was host of “America’s Outdoor Journal” on the Outdoor Channel. She also fronted a radio show “Bitsy Kelley Outdoors”
“I certainly miss radio most of all” she told me at a recent Sydney road show where her slick and informed presentation prompted a strong response from a mixture of Agents and Media.
She refers to herself in IT terms as 3G and her children as 4G. The Kelley family have made a huge global contribution to Tourism and Hospitality especially in Hawaii.
Bitsy also admitted that she didn’t know the ‘Itsy bitsy’song. It’s an age thing Bitsy!!
