Thirteen people were killed and 31 others injured when a tour bus travelling at high speed slammed into a semitrailer truck in California in one of the worst road crashes in the US for years.
The crash happened about 160 kilometres east of Los Angeles, near Palm Springs, and the bus hit the truck from the rear rather than head-on.
The impact crushed the front third of the bus, which was owned by American operator USA Holiday.
The bus was not fitted with seat belts, reports said, and the impact sent passengers flying. Most people were reportedly asleep when the impact occurred as the tour was returning from a casino. The bus driver was among those killed.
Firefighters used ladders to climb into bus windows to remove bodies.
Authorities are checking whether alcohol, drugs or fatigue played a role.
