Parrtjima – A Festival In Light

July 16, 2016 Whats On No Comments Print Print Email Email

The spelling of September’s Indigenous light festival in Alice Springs has been modified to Parrtjima – A Festival in Light. The previous spelling was Parrtyeme.http://eng.taiwan.net.tw/

As part of the ongoing consultation and collaboration with the community in Alice Springs, the Northern Territory Major Events Company and AGB Events have amended the spelling of the event name, in order to better convey the appropriate meaning. (The pronunciation of the name remains the same. Pronounced Par-CHee-ma.)

Parrtjima means ‘lighting up’ and conveys two meanings: physically illuminating an object with light,  and ‘lighting up’ as in to shed light and understanding on a subject.

Parrtjima is the imparting of meaning and understanding, which reflects the event’s objective of sharing Indigenous art and culture.

The free 10-night festival will light up Alice Springs, Central Australia, from Friday, 23 September to Sunday, 2 October 2016.
