Passengers at the piano bring high notes to Frankfurt Airport

A surprising melodious sound has been emanating from Frankfurt Airport’s (FRA) Terminal 1, Departures Hall B, since last Friday. In contrast to the usual sounds of P.A. announcements, rolling luggage, and passengers on the go, FRA’s new grand piano is producing good vibrations for the enjoyment of all – with the star musicians being the passengers themselves. Attracting a lot of attention, the FRA piano is available for any guest or passenger to play his favorite song. The sign in front of the white piano centered on a red carpet invites passersby to “play your favorite song.” Amateur musicians in particular are invited to stride over the red carpet, sit down at the grand piano and let their fingers spontaneously fly across the keyboard. Passengers can play whatever songs they like: music from Strauss to Sinatra or from Mozart to Metallica.20140417-2252_m

Fraport AG’s manager responsible for the piano project, Dr. Thomas Frank says: “This initiative is aimed at making the time our guests spend at Frankfurt Airport as enjoyable as possible – by providing passengers with a musical surprise. During the first days, passengers could already find their way to the FRA piano simply by following the sound of music until seeing a crowd of spectators in the distance. Certainly, our piano for passengers is reaching the right high notes.”

Comments from enthusiastic passengers include: “It’s great – live music before my eight-hour flight; don’t stop the music!” The piano is a welcome diversion for listeners and an opportunity for musically-inclined passengers to present their talent and love of music. “My piano teacher always says I should take advantage of showing what I can do,” says 10-year-old Antonius, as he sits down at the piano (More in this video: ). For now, the piano is available for a three-month test phase.
