Pax flee plainclothes pilot going through divorce

The pilot arrived out of uniform in an emotional state and told passengers over the intercom that she was going through a divorce. That was when passengers decided to get off the plane in a hurry.

The extraordinary story of the United Airlines flight out of Austin, Texas, bound for San Francisco, was related in the Dallas Morning News.

The paper said disquiet began while the plane was on the tarmac when the pilot asked passengers if they had any problem with her flying in plainclothes, adding in an aside that she was going through a divorce.

A man who live-tweeted the pilot’s actions said she also told passengers that she didn’t care whether they voted for Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, “they’re both [expletives deleted]”.

A passenger said on Twitter the situation moved from uncomfortable to scary. When the pilot suggested that any passengers uneasy about her flying the plane might like to get off, many did so.

The Austin American-Statesman mentioned a video that has since been removed from YouTube, in which the pilot is allegedly heard saying “Don’t worry, I’m going to let my co-pilot fly. He’s a man.”

The pilot was escorted off the flight in tears. The Dallas Morning News quoted United Airlines saying the flight was delayed for two hours. An airline spokesman apologised to passengers and said the airline was now discussing the matter with the pilot.
