Peregrine on Top of the World. Literally

In 1977, the very first Peregrine tour set off from Nepal. More than 35 years later, the bond between company and country is still strong, and Peregrine continues to make positive contributions to the lives of the local people.

One staff member has just returned from what was literally a marathon fundraising effort in Nepal. Rod Griffith, Peregrine Sales Manager New Zealand, completed a 42-kilometre marathon from Everest Base Camp to Namche Bazaar, at times running at altitudes of 5,000 metres. The aim was to raise money to support the education of people living in the Khumbu (Everest) Valley.

“I’ve been trekking this region for the past 20 years,” said Rod. “Over that time I’ve gained an enormous respect for the Sherpa people and wanted to give something back.”

Rod was one of 180 runners taking part in the marathon.  He said the altitude made it difficult to breathe, “but it was the glacial terrain, exposed rocks and un-yielding yaks that made the going particularly challenging.”

Rod’s achievement comes shortly after it was announced that one of Peregrine’s local leaders summited Mount Everest. Pasang Sherpa is the son of the late Pema Sherpa, who was a Peregrine leader in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

“We pride ourselves on using local leaders who have exceptional knowledge of a place. When it comes to Nepal, it doesn’t get much more experienced than Pasang,” said Steve Wroe, Peregrine Nepal Destination Manager.

“I am delighted and more than a little bit proud to announce the achievements of both Pasang and Rod. It’s even more poignant that this year is the 60th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s summit of Everest.”
