Personal travel managers’ Andrea Turner, representative of Windsor in Brisbane and Michelle Thomas representative for Norah Head on New South Wales’ Central Coast have reason to be proud of themselves, having recently climbed to the Base Camp on Mt Everest as part of the World’s Highest Shave.

“It was the most amazing, breathtaking, humbling, grounding, exhausting and exhilarating trip, all on one! The highlight was achieving my goal of getting to the Everest Base Camp with a shaved head. We actually made it to the top of Kala Patthar, 200 metres higher than the Base Camp at 4am to see the sunrise on Everest.  It was the hardest part of the trip but with 360 degree views of the Himalayas, you truly feel like you are on top of the world and nothing can beat that experience,” says Turner.

A climb up Everest is something that needs to be trained for, although Thomas proves with only five weeks training, determination for a great cause can be enough.

“With only a few weeks training I really didn’t think I would be fit enough to actually make it to the Base Camp.  We had an amazing team that supported each other and I can truly say my sheer determination and desire to raise funds for such an important cause was an overriding factor in my achievement. Once you put your mind to something that is really important to you, you can do anything,” she says.

The 20-person team all had their own motivation to participate in the fundraising event.

“Our team ranged from 29-72 years, all with their own inspirational reasons to participate. For some it was on their bucket list, others just wanted to step outside their comfort zone and be challenged. One man lost his son to Leukaemia and his wife to cancer, another had been handicapped with hip operations yet he was able to regain enough mobility to get him to the Base Camp, something five years ago was only a dream.  You feel so proud to be part of a group of people from all walks of life that have come together with ultimately one goal of raising money and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation,” says Turner.

Collectively the group raised $49,081 with all funds raised going directly to research and provide support and services to people living with Leukaemia.

“We exceeded our fundraising target by almost $10,000 and as a team we are so overwhelmed with the support we have received. Donations have come from family, friends and clients It’s one thing to do the shave and another to trek to the Everest Base Camp so to combine the two really got peoples attention. It had people talking, in fact they are still talking about it,” says Turner.

Turner has been chosen as the Brisbane representative for the Leukaemia Foundation and is already looking ahead to the 2015 event by becoming a booking agent.

“Next year there will be two groups with separate itineraries. One will do the same trip as we did this year, going to Everest Base Camp and the other itinerary will be less challenging with a shorter five day trek to Annapurna and then a drive to the Everest Base Camp on the Tibetan side,” says Turner.
