The theme of TravelManagers’ recent Annual National Conference, which was this year held in Adelaide, was “Focus”. One personal travel manager (PTM) found an opportunity during her post-conference famil on Kangaroo Island to apply this theme quite literally, uncovering a hidden talent and entertaining her colleagues in the process.
Tanya Patterson, representative for Clyde North in Victoria, spent three days exploring the highlights of Kangaroo Island as part of a group of thirty PTMs and eight of their partners. While she was there, she hit upon the idea of filming some short, light-hearted video clips that mimicked the styles of different wildlife and travel shows.

“The video clips were uploaded to our ‘Closed PTM Facebook page’ as a tongue-in-cheek way to communicate to PTMs who had not been able to attend the conference or famils about what we were up to,” explains Patterson.
Patterson says she wasn’t prepared for the overwhelmingly positive response to her videos.
“I have had an amazing response from my fellow PTMs, saying how great the videos were and asking if I can make some more!” she says. “It turns out that the videos are actually a pretty great tool to give consultants an unbiased overview of the current state of a destination and how the hotels and attractions look.”

She says she also hopes the idea will be picked up by her TravelManagers’ colleagues, a number of whom assisted in producing the original series of ten video clips.
“Nicole Edgar, [representative for Narre Warren South, Victoria], along with some of the other PTMs were great sports in contributing to the filming, using props, and being included in the clips,” she adds.
According to Patterson, although the clips were not intended to be viewed by clients, she believes that they will be the eventual beneficiaries of her work.
“It’s really just another tool to ensure that as PTMs we have the most current, most accurate information to pass on to our clients.”
“Hands up, who wants to star in ‘Tanya Talks Travel’?”
TravelManagers’ Executive General Manager, Michael Gazal, says the company is fully supportive of initiatives like the one undertaken by Patterson.
“We place a lot of emphasis on being cooperative within our business. Tanya’s work both in front and behind the video camera represents exactly the kind of company culture we are aiming to create: fun, collaborative, creative and a bit left-field.”
For Patterson, the positive feedback she has received from throughout TravelManagers reflects her view of the company itself.
“I have a fun, pro-active, more-the-merrier attitude, and I like to make sure that everyone else is enjoying themselves too. I love being a personal travel manager – it gives me a wonderful work/family life balance and I want everyone else to feel the same.”
Can you please let me know who she is talking to and where they are?
According to Patterson, she has had such a great response that she is now intending to continue with the videos on a more serious note, presenting the realities of destinations and what they have to offer (albeit infused with Patterson’s keen sense of humour).
First up will be a visit to Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort over New Year. Patterson has invested in a selfie stick and intends to produce and share some new video clips to show the current state of the resort: her colleagues are eagerly awaiting the next episode.
