Peru hailed as Top Culinary Destination in South America in the World Travel Awards 2014

For the third consecutive year, Peru has been hailed as Best Culinary Destination in South America at the World Travel Awards (WTA).

This year Peru, with its fascinating mix of cuisine, culture and colour, was also recognised as Best Cultural Destination, Leading Heritage Destination and Lima has won Leading City Break Destination in South America.

The WTA, often referred to as the ‘Oscars of the Travel Industry’, were established in 1993 to recognise and reward excellence in the travel industry, tourism and hospitality worldwide.

The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism and President of the Board of the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for export and tourism, Magali Silva Velarde-Alvarez said PromPeru was very pleased with the results and thanked the joint efforts of the public and private sectors.

“Achieving prizes of this magnitude means to encourage investment in tourism. It enables us to further promote quality service as well as encourage sustainable tourism activities.

“We are excited to have also won the Best Cultural Destination, and Leading Heritage Destination in South America. We believe this is the result of our latest Peru campaign: Hidden Treasures Empire. A major campaign undertaken by the current government to position our country as the birthplace of an important cultural legacy for humanity,” said Magali Silva Velarde-Alvarez.

Peru has also won in other categories, taking home a total of 12 out of 40 awards presented at the WTA 2014. Other awards included:

  • Leading Business Hotel: Ramada Costa del Sol
  • Leading Business Hotel in South America: Swissotel Lima
  • Leading Hotel and casino resort in South America: Delfines Hotel & Casino
  • Best City Hotel in South America: Belmond Miraflores Park
  • Best Green operator in South America: Explorandes
  • Leading Hotel in South America: JW Marriott Hotel Lima
  • Best new hotel in South America: JW Marriott Cusco
  • Best tour operator: Yampu Tours
