OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAPhang-nga province in southern Thailand has developed Khao Nang Hong, a 400-meter-high mountain, as a new eco-tourist site that will be known as the province’s symbol of land tourism.
The introduction of the new tourist attraction is in line with the Phang-nga Provincial Development Plan, 2015 to 2018, which sets a vision to develop the province into an eco-tourist center.

Khao Nang Hong, or Nang Hong Mountain, is expected to emerge as a magnet for tourists because of its natural beauty and readiness to welcome visitors. This mountain resembles a women lying on her side, with the head on the northern side.

In the past, Khao Nang Hong was a major transportation route linking Phang-nga with nearby provinces. Since the route curved and was difficult to travel, many travelers turned to other new routes. Then fewer people used this route, which was later left unattended.

Today Phang-nga has grown significantly and it also hosts more and more visitors each year. Aware of the potential of Phang-nga in terms of tourism, Phang-nga Governor Thumrong Charoenkul has launched a project to develop Khao Nang Hong as a new tourism attraction, where people may visit to enjoy nature and observe the local way of life.

In 2011, the road surface on the mountain was improved to ensure safety for travelers. The province set aside a fund to build pavements, pavilions to observe scenic views, and a number of rest rooms. In the 2012 fiscal year, more funds were allocated to develop the landscape there, construct a tower for scenic views, and install more electric lights, with a solar cell system.

Local residents have been allowed to open food shops in many areas at this new eco-tourist site. Visitors coming to pay homage to the Nang Hong shrine and appreciate the natural beauty usually have lunch at the scenic viewing points, where delicious native food is offered.

Khao Nang Hong has also become a venue for local people to organize activities aimed at minimizing global warming and other environmentally friendly tourism activities, such as mountain bike competitions, to promote a healthy lifestyle and reduce energy use.

Phang-nga is attractive to nature lovers and adventurous holiday-makers, as it boasts many tourist sites, especially marine attractions. The Phang-nga Governor has come up with the concept of making Khao Nang Hong known as the symbol of land tourism in Phang-nga, like Khao Tapu, which is recognized as the symbol of the Phang-nga Bay.

Khao Nang Hong has become a new tourist attraction and local people are ready to welcome all visitors. Many visitors to this mountain are enchanted with the magnificent scenery there, and they revisit it to explore hidden amazing places in Phang-nga province.
