The MCA presents YOKO ONO MORNING PEACE 2015, a global gathering at sunrise on June 21, 2015 (9am-1pm), celebrating the MoMA exhibition Yoko Ono: One Woman Show, 1960–1971 and the 50th anniversary of Yoko Ono’s New York performance of Morning Piece (1964) to George Maciunas. A morning of free fun for the whole family, the event features a participatory art-making Mandala workshop, outdoor drawing class, yoga workshops on the MCA rooftop terrace and front lawn with lululemon athletica, and a special New-York themed breakfast menu at the MCA Café.

YOKO ONO MORNING PEACE 2015 is organized by The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in partnership with the Fondazione La Triennale di Milano (Milan), Garage Museum of Contemporary Art (Moscow), the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (Istanbul), the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles), 493848_num1080976_600x600M+ (Hong Kong), the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (Sydney), and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (Tokyo).

Morning Piece was first performed in Tokyo in 1964 and again on the roof of Ono’s apartment building at 87 Christopher Street, New York City, in September 1965. At these events, attendees gathered at sunrise, and Ono sold artworks with typewritten pieces of paper attached to glass and other materials. Each specified a future date and a particular period of morning (e.g., “February 3, 1987 after sunrise,” “January 1, 1972 all morning”). Ono would inform buyers, “You can see the sky through it,” and offer them the possibility of possessing something intangible: a future morning.

Referencing the original work, YOKO ONO MORNING PEACE 2015 is a sunrise gathering activated by events across the globe, allowing the celebration to continue for 24 hours as the sun rises in different time zones.

The MCA will offer visiting guests the following activities:

MCA Galleries: The whole museum will open early from 9am, including the Light Show exhibition.

MCA Café: The MCA Cafe will be open from 9am and serve a scrumptious New-York style breakfast menu. Think cronuts, bagels & cream, Mimosas, Belvedere Bloody Marys and much more! Chill out, take in the views and flick through Sunday newspapers of the world.

Giant art-making Mandala workshop: join the MCA Artist Educators anytime between 10am-12pm for a participatory Mandala workshop on the MCA front lawn. Help us create a beautiful temporary artwork using rocks, pebbles and naturally-occurring materials (FREE, drop-in, all ages welcome).

Attendees will get to experience both the yin and yang sides of the yoga (free, drop-in, bring warm layers).

Beyond the eight official events at partner institutions, individuals are encouraged to host their own events according to the following instructions: “On the solstice at sunrise / celebrate mornings of / past, future, and now./ Listen to the world./ Touch each other / when the sun comes up.” (Yoko Ono, spring 2015).

All participants are encouraged to share their experiences on social media via the hashtag #YokoOnoPeace, and posts will be aggregated online on the official YOKO ONO MORNING PEACE 2015 Tagboard.
