Phuket International Airport’s (HKT) Terminal X started operation on February 5 to provide a relief to congestion at the airport’s existing terminal.

The opening follows a successful fast-track construction of the facility that will provide the much-needed additional capacity to cope with increasing traffic demand before Phuket International Airport main expansion is completed in 2015.

Terminal X will be used primarily for passenger check-in with a total usable area of 1 320 square metres equipped with 10 check-in counters complete with baggage storage space, a passenger waiting area, an outdoor resting area, a commercial zone and airline Sidebar-Article-Banner-250offices.

It will be capable of handling 1 000 passengers per hour, effectively addressing the overcrowding at the check-in area of Phuket International Airport’s main passenger terminal.

Lesley Simpson, spokesperson for the Tourism Authority of Thailand, based in Johannesburg said “Phuket International Airport’s main expansion is on track, and when it is fully completed by May next year (2015), the airport’s annual passenger processing capacity will be raised from 6.5 million to 12.5 million.”

The airports expansion includes construction of a new international passenger terminal and improving the existing terminal which will then serve domestic passengers.

Traffic through Phuket International Airport, one of Thailand’s busiest airports operated by the Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT), continues to rise. For the month of January 2014 alone, combined passengers passing through the airport came to a daily average of 37 584, an increase of 11.30% over the same period last year.

The daily passenger breakdowns are 22 441 for international arrivals and 15 143 for domestic.

Aircraft movements have seen similar growth, leaping 11.48% in January 2014 to 224 a day: 126 international flights and 98 domestic. A total of 48 airlines now operate through Phuket International Airport, 38 of which are operated on a scheduled flight basis while the other ten are charter operators.
