Plane skids off runway and almost plunges into sea

January 16, 2018 Headline News No Comments Email Email

A bird strike is one theory being advanced to explain a near-catastrophic accident which saw a plane skid off the runway on landing, to end up dangling over a cliff with its nose almost in the sea.

Miraculously, when you look at the position the plane ended up in, no passengers or crew were hurt.

The incident happened at Turkey’s Trazbon Airport and involved a Pegasus Airlines B737-800 aircraft, flying from Ankara to Trabzon in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. The aircraft carried 162 passengers, two pilots and four crew. All disembarked safely and without injury.

The plane ploughed into icy mud when it left the runway, which may have stopped its headlong plunge into the Black Sea. The following footage was filmed from a drone.

The plane was substantially damaged and lost its starboard (right-hand) engine, which ended up in the sea.

Video shot inside the plane gives an idea of the shock and panic. Flight attendants can be heard addressing passengers.

Pegasus Airlines said in a statement that its plane “had a runway excursion incident”. That’s putting it mildly!
