Planes battle to land as Storm Eleanor blasts Britain

January 5, 2018 Headline News No Comments Email Email

Planes battled to land and a British Airways pilot was forced to make a “go-around” to land on second attempt as galeforce winds battered Britain during Storm Eleanor on Wednesday.

Some of the landings at London Stansted can be viewed here.

Lonodn’s Daily Mirror ran footage shot from inside the cabin on a flight from Edinburgh to London City Airport. The plane hitt turbulence as it approached the runway before roaring back up again for a second attempt.

It was captioned “Terrifying moment BA pilot aborts landing in Storm Eleanor” although viewing it you might think the term “terrifying” is a little strong.

The storm brought violent winds of up to 160km/h across the UK, cutting power to thousands of homes and causing disruption to flights.

Passengers who booked on the Eurostar between London and Paris were glad they had done so, as flights suffered delays. Storms mean planes have to be separated more widely over airports, even if the airports are operating, which can build into delays.

An overview of storm damage can be seen below.
