As the 2014 Tibet travel season quickly approaches travelers around the world are planning their tours. Tipping customs can vary drastically across the world’s most popular travel destinations leaving those planning to visit Tibet wondering who to tip and how much.

TibetCtrip Travel Service-TCTS emphasizes that, in Tibet, travelers are not obligated to tip but according to local customs good service does deserve a good tip.

  • Tibet travel agency has special tour deals again before season comes in 2014!

Tour guides who are knowledgeable and enthusiastic are an integral part of a quality tour. If travelers are satisfied with the service they’ve received 60-70 RMB per day is a good tip. Alongside Tibet tour guides are the drivers who ensure travel groups make it from destination to destination safely; 40-50 RMB per day is a good tip for a driver. Since they may sometimes be booked back-to-back it’s best to tip the day before the group leaves Tibet.

  • Some trekking tours require a yak to carry equipment like tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, and cooking gear. 150-200 RMB for the entire trek is a good tip for a yak person.
  • It’s also appropriate to tip hotel staff. When a porter brings luggage to a hotel room a 10-20 RMB tip is customary. Over a 2-3 day stay the maid would appreciate a tip of about 15-20 RMB, a bigger tip over longer stays may be more appropriate.

Travel staff work very hard to help travelers enjoy their tour of Tibet. More often than not they depend on income from the tour season to support their family throughout the whole year. Small gestures like tipping go a long way in supporting the Tibetan community; if travelers enjoy the services they have received an appropriate tip is customary. The 2014 Tibet tour season is coming up quick, while visiting be sure to give good tips for good service!
