P&O Cruises Pacific Jewel follows the winter sun to Brisbane

Pacific Dawn has long been a popular feature in Brisbane based full time at Portside Cruise Terminal doing a mixture of Pacific Island cruises, Queensland coastal cruises and short break cruises.
Pacific Jewel will be based in Brisbane for a similar program of winter cruises from June 29 through to August 17. Having two ships based in Brisbane will effectively double the number of calls to Queensland coastal destination such as Airlie Beach, Port Douglas, Cairns and Whitsundays. PACIFIC JEWEL LEAVES SYDNEY 022 COMPRESSED

During the two month two-ship deployment, Pacific Jewel will do three Queensland coastal cruises adding to Pacific Dawn’s two coastal cruises and one short break Queensland cruise.
Basing Pacific Dawn and Pacific Jewel in Brisbane conjures memories of an earlier ‘golden age’ of P&O ships when Strathaird and Strathnaver were famously known in Australia and the UK as the ‘P&O White Sisters’.

The dual deployment of Jewel and Dawn in Brisbane is also a sign that Queensland is sharing in the enormous growth in cruising in Australia. A Cruise Downunder report released late last year showed that Brisbane hosted 324,582 passenger days in 2012-2013 with total passenger, crew, operator and corporate spending at $349.7 million.

P&O Cruises Destinations Manager Michael Mihajlov explains the decision to have Pacific Jewel join Pacific Dawn in Brisbane for the winter season:

“Basing two P&O Cruises superliners in Brisbane for the first time is a firm indication of our confidence in the strength of the Queensland cruise market. It also reflects the popularity of winter cruising from Brisbane thanks to the promise of warmer weather and great destinations in Queensland and in the Pacific Islands.”
