P&O Reveals Massive Purchases of Australian Produce

In its first year operating a record five ships, P&O Cruises has revealed the mega ‘shopping list’ that makes it one of the nation’s biggest purchasers of Australian produce.

Since welcoming Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden last November, creating the largest cruise fleet based year round in Australia, P&O Cruises’ already substantial supply list has grown by 30 per cent.

P&O’s annual local purchases now include about 2.6 million kilograms of meat and poultry and 4.7 million kilograms of fruit and vegetables from local suppliers, as well as 6.2 million fresh eggs – enough to stretch end-to-end from Sydney to Canberra.

With nearly 12,000 guests and crew to feed every day, P&O’s grocery list also features 125,000 kilograms of cheese and more than 1.2 million litres of milk, yoghurt, cream and ice cream a year.

The huge quantities of Australian-sourced produce make up part of the cruise industry’s $4.6 billion annual contribution to the Australian economy, which in 2015-2016 accounted for 19,000 direct and indirect jobs.

P&O Cruises President Sture Myrmell said the line’s purchase of such big quantities of produce from Australian suppliers was further evidence that cruising was an economic powerhouse with flow on benefits to more than just the tourism industry.

“We often refer to the multiplier effect of cruising and the way the economic benefits carry through to so many parts of the economy,” Mr Myrmell said.

“When it comes to these commercial relationships, none is more satisfying than with our local suppliers of fresh produce.”

P&O Cruises’ meat purchases include more than 92,000 kilograms of Australian lamb –  a firm favourite with Australian guests – with the line recently entering a long term supplier partnership with Dubbo-based Fletcher International Exports for the supply of lamb to the five-ship fleet.

Fletcher International Export’s Marketing Manager Graham Lyon said: “Fletcher’s aim is to work in long term relationships with large and growing sectors like Australia’s successful cruise industry. The economic benefit of P&O’s purchases of produce from local suppliers is being felt across a number of states with NSW, Queensland and Victoria accounting for a significant number of products and quantities.
