The Poe Museum will introduce its new iPhone app Self-Guided Tour during the June Unhappy Hour event on June 27, 2013. The Tour has been developed on the MustSee mobile audio guide application available on iTunes.

The Poe Museum is a national source of education materials for the teaching of Edgar Allan Poe and his work. The audio guide tour provides an interactive experience featuring 29 of the museum’s artifacts that help tell the writer’s life story. It complements the other educational activity packets and programs that the museum already provides teachers and students. The Poe Museum’s mission is to promote literacy and a life-long love of reading by interpreting Poe’s life, work, and influence for the education and enjoyment of a global audience. The museum, located in Richmond, Virginia contains the world’s finest EGT_Artical Banner B 250x250collection of Edgar Allan Poe’s manuscripts, letters, first editions, memorabilia and personal belongings.

The MustSee platform is a mobile guide community platform where organizations and individuals can create guides and set their own price. It includes aniOS application and a website where creators can design and upload their own personalized guides. Current guide developers — including museums, cultural institutions, tour guides and travel companies as well as cultural enthusiasts — are able to create interactive art and travel guides with the MustSee app. App users can find guides created by either professionally, like the Poe Museum’s, or by other users with common interests. Guides are based on the places and items located there and may include audio, text, photos and links to web pages or videos. Guide users can download them directly to their device and can interact with the community of like-minded users by commenting, adding photos, rating and sharing on their email, Facebook and Twitter.

The Poe Museum was able to upload previously created audio content, along with photos and text to the MustSee application to make the new mobile guide. Poe Museum curator Chris Semtner highlighted the ability to expand the same content to iOS mobile devices as a driving force for using the MustSee service. “We are able to expand the distribution and give more people on-site the capability to use the audio tour guide,” he said. “Plus, there is an opportunity to drive interest from non-local people to come visit the museum while generating revenue. We don’t have to manage additional hardware or software while not having any charge for the service.”

“Many museums have trouble being found by their respective audiences. MustSee provides the Poe Museum to be able to easily create an interactive, audio guide tour for their visitors while exposing the guide to a bigger audience of culture and literary learners,” said John Soppe, CEO of Areté Media, producers of MustSee. “We are providing a free platform to help those institutions and individuals create high quality experiences that will enrich the lives for the MustSee audience.” The guide’s price is set by the creator for free or can be offered as an in-app purchase, which is shared by Apple, the creator and MustSee.

The launch of the Poe Museum Self- Guided Tour will take place at the June Unhappy Hour: The Premature Burial on Thursday June 27, 2013 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The event will be in the Poe Museum’s Enchanted Garden, located at 1914 East Main Street in Richmond, Virginia. The museum can be contacted at 1-888-21E-APOE or at info(at)poemuseum(dot)org.

The Poe Museum Self-Guided Tour is found on the MustSee app. It can be downloaded as an in-app purchase for $.99.
