One Ocean Expeditions (OOE) is excited to be partnering with Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN) to host in an upcoming event at the Arctic Winter Games arena in Iqaluit on August 9th, 2019. The event will welcome youth from RPAN’s ‘Get Happy Day Camp’ program and their staff, Iqaluit Curling Club (ICC) members, and OOE guests on their arrival into Iqaluit ahead of OOE’S  Baffin Island and Greenland Explorer voyage, departing that same day.

The event marks the arrival of a Rock Solid Productions floor curling set that has been donated to RPAN and the Iqaluit community by OOE as part of their commitment to give back to the regions in which they travel, and in celebration of their partnerships with RPAN and Curling Canada. The curling set has traveled across Canada, connecting communities and raising awareness about youth programming in remote locales as part of the #OOERocks campaign. Olympian and World Champion curler, Jill Officer and Actor and Royal Canadian Geographical Society Explorer-in-Residence Johnny Issaluk, will be on hand to present the curling set to RPAN and the ICC. During the event, Jill will be sharing her Olympic experience and will have her gold medal on hand for viewing and photo opportunities, as well as donating a signed jersey to the community raffle.

“I wish you a very successful day,” stated Commissioner of Nunavut Nellie Kusugak, matron of RCGS Resolute. “Thank you for bringing our gold Olympian Jill Officer to Iqaluit.  She will be a wonderful role model who will inspire our youth and bring excitement to our city.”

In attendance will be OOE RPAN Youth Leader Hayden Hickey, Iqaluit Curling Club President Kim Masson and Nunavut Curling Association President Alison Griffin, who will accept the donation of the curling set. Curlers from the local clubs and RPAN youth will join Jill Officer in floor curling demonstrations to those in attendance, who are welcome to join them in friendly competition.

A BBQ prepared by RPAN and the City of Iqaluit will take place for the day camp children, curling club members and arriving passengers of OOE’s vessel RCGS Resolute. OOE’s guests are invited to participate in the community gathering with the residents of Iqaluit and sample traditional food samples such as bannock. Following the event, passengers will depart on RCGS Resolute with Mrs. Officer and Mr. Issaluq, who will be joining them on board as special guests, giving presentations and participating in onboard programming.

Also joining the One Ocean Expeditions’ voyage are Artist, Filmmaker, Author and guest speaker Cory Trepanier, Dr. Joost Schokkenbroek, Historian and Executive Director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum, OOE Artist-In-Residence and Photographer David McEown, and Eric Solomon, Director of Arctic Programs at the Vancouver Aquarium.
