Police probe creepy groping attack during turbulence

Accused of groping a female passenger during a flight, an elderly man has claimed a sudden burst of air turbulence caused his hand to fall between the legs of the young woman sitting beside him.

Police are not entirely convinced.

The strange and unpleasant incident allegedly took place on a US domestic flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Charlotte, North Carolina.

The New York Post said Charlotte-Mecklenburg police had received a report that a 73-year-old man had sexually assaulted a passenger in an adjoining seat on a United flight to Charlotte.

The incident allegedly occurred last Tuesday night and the case has been handed over to the FBI, the New York Post reported.

Channel 9 in Charlotte reported that a woman aged in her 30s had said a “creep” sitting next to her grabbed her between her legs.

The accused man blamed it on turbulence – saying the shaking plane had caused his hand to fall in her lap.

The channel quoted another female passenger saying she was “sure a woman knows the difference between a hand hitting her versus being groped”.

The incident reportedly caused a commotion at the back of the plane. Flight attendants separated the passengers and when the plane landed, police escorted the man off the plane. The FBI confirmed it is investigating and that no arrests had been made.

According to another news outlet, Charlotte television channel WSOC-TV, the alleged groper is a 73-year-old man from Lithuania.

United Airlines has confirmed it is working closely with authorities on the investigation.

“The safety of our customers is our top priority,” it said in an issued statement.
