Police probe ghastly discovery off Thai beach

A jet-ski driver circling a beach near the Thai resort of Pattaya, trying to warn tourists against riding in the rocky sections of the sea, raced back to shore in shock after making a grisly discovery.

The public spirited jet-skier came across the corpse of a diver, believed to be a middle-aged Westerner, tied to a concrete post with his throat slit.

Pattaya police superintendent Apichai Krobphetch told the Bangkok Post the cause of death could not be determined but it looked unnatural.

Some reports said the corpse was wearing a backpack. Another said the backpack was attached to the concrete mooring post, about 200 metres off Samae beach on the Thai island of Koh Larn, near Pattaya.

The man was wearing a Mares brand wetsuit and flippers and had about 1500 baht (AUD 57) on him, the paper reported.

Police divers searching the seabed near the location of the corpse have collected a snorkel, a cutter, a swimming cap, swimming goggles and other items.

The items are being scanned for fingerprints which might link them with the diver.

Colonel Krobphetch has asked hotels, hostels and lodging houses in the locality to check whether any guests or travelling companions are missing.

Krobphetch said police expect to declare the case a murder. It is difficult to imagine what else it could be.
