A little bit of history

Kyrenia (or Girne) is an ancient city, where the very first settlements appeared 5800 years B.C. Kyrenia was mentioned for the first time in written sources, in the Egyptian documents of the epoch of Pharaoh Ramses III, as one of the eight kingdoms of Cyprus. Throughout its history, the city belonged to the Roman Empire, Byzantium, Venice, Turkey, and Great Britain.

The sights of the city

On the territory of the city, there is the Kyrenia Castle of the 16th century, built by Venetians on the fortifications of the Crusaders. Inside the fortress walls, there is a chapel of the 12th century and a shipwreck museum in which the remains of a Kyrenia ship of the 4th century B.C. are exhibited. The fortress was rebuilt several times. From the original building to our days, only a fragment of the round tower is perfectly preserved here. By the way, you can make beautiful pictures with a view of the bay from the observation deck. This bay is a port for local fishermen.

The whole life of the town is concentrated on the embankment but if you go deep into the town, the flow of tourists is going down, and you can wander through narrow streets almost alone.

If you want to spend a few days here, there are many options for a living: from budget to luxury. The budget includes Malpas Hotel, Hotel Oscar, Hotel Denizkizi, Riverside Holiday Village, Vılla Club and Hotel Sempati. Luxury hotels located directly on the beach – Acapulco Hotel, Cratos Hotel, Mercury Hotel, Vuni Palace, and Merit Hotel.

Take into account that every Wednesday it is organized the bazaar along the Dr. Halim Hocaoglu Street. There you can buy different goods at quite affordable prices (fresh fruits and vegetables, handmade products, jewelry, souvenirs and much more).
