Sydney based boutique agency, Barking Owl Communications has been appointed by Travel Portland, the official destination-marketing organisation for the city, to provide in-market representation for Australia and New Zealand.

The 18-month contract, which commences February, will consist of media and trade outreach and an exciting direct-to-consumer influencer and activation based program, all of which are designed to build on the success Portland is enjoying in this region.

Travel Portland’s International Tourism Manager, Heather Anderson said, “We have been active in the Oceania region for some years and foresee the continued growth of the market especially with the US being the top long haul destination for Australians at this time.”

“Appointing Barking Owl will help us to tell the Portland story and inspire travelers to consider putting us on their itinerary next time around.”

Located in the Pacific Northwest of the US, Portland is the largest city in the state of Oregon with a population of 2.3 million people.  It offers 145 square miles of exciting things to do, eat, drink, see, hike and explore.

“From tiny hotels to big-flavoured craft beers and even bigger bookstores; tax-free shopping, urban wineries, bespoke designers, skiing and amazing foodie experiences from food trucks to five star dining, Portland is a year round destination with high appeal to the Australia/New Zealand market” said Jill Collins, owner of Barking Owl Communications.

“Travel is part of our DNA and we could not be more excited to utilise our extensive destination marketing experience to share Travel Portland’s story and encourage more travellers to visit this vibrant, creative, quirky yet sophisticated city.”

While the key focus of the program for Portland is leisure travel, it will also reinforce the appeal of the destination for business travel, meetings and conventions.

The account team will be led by Jill Collins, and supported by Trish White (Trade Manager), Katie Cahill (Media Program Manager) and Fiona King (Consumer Direct Manager).

Travel Portland and Barking Owl will continue to work closely with Travel Oregon and, their in-market representative, Canuckiwi, to drive an integrated strategy between city and state initiatives.
