Spread the love

It is not only the temperatures exceeding 40°C that leave Rio de Janeiro boiling in February. From day 1, the city lives the pre-Carnival atmosphere. The first weekend of February featured only two street Samba dancing groups, but in the next few days, 174 street Samba dancing groups will dust themselves off and bring joy to the Cariocas. The party happens in all areas of the city and the peak of the pre-Carnival period is the weekend from February 22nd to 24th, with 115 of these dancing groups.

In a dancing mood, Cariocas and tourists get into the groove with irreverent, very colorful costumes. Individually or in a group, they use creativity to have fun. During this period, the people crowd the streets of the Saara, a popular trade section in Downtown Rio, as well as the corridors of Mercadão de Madureira, to the North side of town. On the shopping list, items such as masks, Indian headdresses, clown’s hats and noses, pirate eye patches and lots of glitter.

We prepared a gallery with images that reflect the creativity and the joy of the people who take to the streets in Rio. Check it out below:
