Independent research commissioned by SureSave, involving more than 1,000 respondents, indicates that travellers with pre-existing medical conditions may be less likely to head overseas, and are possibly reducing the amount of time they spend on holiday.
Of those with a pre-existing condition (over 41 percent), a large proportion haven’t travelled since discovering the condition (17.6 percent), while others were unclear if their condition was covered by their last travel insurance policy (19.8 percent).
Michael Callaghan, General Manager at SureSave, says that, “Our research shows that almost half of the respondents suffer from a pre-existing condition or have experienced a major surgery. Interestingly, it’s not just the Baby Boomers affected by this. In fact, over 60% of those with a pre-existing condition are under the age of 60. It’s worrying to think that a fifth of travellers with a condition admitted that they weren’t sure if they were covered by travel insurance the last time they travelled.”
SureSave’s research also showed that Australian-based travellers with a pre-existing condition are more likely (75.3 percent) to take an overseas trip of 14 days or less.
“At SureSave, we want travellers to see their dream destinations and explore the world. Travellers with a pre-existing condition shouldn’t feel deterred from travelling. It’s important to us that everyone can find travel insurance information and a policy that suits their needs. No matter what your situation, SureSave recommends that travellers have a clear understanding of their own pre-existing medical conditions and the cover and support available to them,” adds Michael.
In an industry first, SureSave is offering cover for travellers with pre-existing medical conditions across all its international outbound plans and domestic plans, including ‘Budget, Necessities and Comprehensive’ policies, to ensure that there is a policy for each individual.
“We want to make it as easy as possible for travellers with a pre-existing condition to travel. Last year, we revamped our assessment process and made it easier than ever to get a speedy response on travel insurance policies through the introduction of an advanced medical screening solution, which can be completed in-store by travel agents or at home by the traveller.”
SureSave’s 2015 Travel Insurance Index is the company’s third independent research. Conducted annually, the aim of the survey is to reveal trends in travel and travel insurance purchasing habits.
SureSave offers something travellers need more than ever before: World Assistance. SureSave provides safety assistance and insurance to cover travellers before, during and after their travels.
