In the weekly program “Yingluck Government Meets the People” on 23 November 2013, Permanent Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office Professor Tongthong Chandransu, spoke about these two major events.

Concerning the celebration of His Majesty the King’s 86th birthday anniversary, Professor Tongthong said that the upcoming public audience to be granted by His Majesty the King to members of the Royal Family and government officials would be the first public audience in Thai history to be held outside Bangkok. It is scheduled to take place at Rajapracha Samakhom Pavilion, Klai Kangwon Palace in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, at 10:00 a.m. on 5 December, His Majesty’s birthday.

Since the pavilion can accommodate only around 600-700 persons, members of the public have been urged to view this event on a live television broadcast, which is expected to begin at 10:00 a.m. and continue until 11:00 a.m. on 5 December. During this period, the Royal Guards, with 12 battalions, will also take the oath of allegiance in front of the Rajapracha Samakhom Pavilion.

Professor Tongthong also urged the general public to attend the exhibition “More Than a King” to be organized in honor of His Majesty between 1 and 10 December 2013 at the Siam Paragon Shopping Center in Bangkok. The captions for the exhibition will also be presented in both Thai and English. Cultural performances from ASEAN+3 countries will be staged, as well, to celebrate this auspicious occasion.

He said that many titles have been presented to His Majesty the King in recognition of his wide-ranging talents in many fields. For example, he is recognized as the Teacher of the Land, the Father of Thai Crafts Standards, and the Supreme Artist. More than 200 honorary degrees have been conferred on His Majesty by various universities and institutions, in Thailand and abroad.

As for “The Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Her Majesty Queen Saovabha Phongsri of the Fifth Reign,” Professor Tongthong explained that Her Majesty Queen Saovabha Phongsri was the mother of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) and King Prajadhipok (Rama VII). The 37th session of the UNESCO Conference in Paris, held from 5 to 20 November 2013, announced that Her Majesty Queen Saovabha Phongsri is recognized as one of the world’s great personalities. Her outstanding work in education for women contributed greatly to the development of Thailand.

A daughter of King Mongkut (Rama IV), the late Her Majesty Queen Saovabha Phongsri was born on 1 January 1863. On the occasion of the150th anniversary of the birth of Her Majesty Queen Saovabha Phongsri, the Thai government is scheduled to hold two-year celebrations from 2014 to 2015, with many activities and projects to mark this special occasion.
