With a 213 per cent increase* in visitation from Australian travelers over the last decade, it would appear Japan’s popularity is well and truly surging… and with over 55,000 people taking flight to the popular destination in 2018 alone, it’s showing no signs of slowing down!

In line with this growth, it’s no surprise that one of Japan’s top hoteliers – Prince Hotels and Resorts – have reported an unprecedented number of Australians checking into their properties over the last 12 months, with over 25,000 people choosing their properties when visiting Japan.

Notably, the leading hotel and leisure company are reporting a 129 per cent increase of Australian’s checking-in during their winter ski season, with properties located in key tourism areas including Furano, Naeba, and Shizukuishi.

Tourism expert and Team Leader at Universal Traveller, Isabella Thompson, said the increase in Aussie’s travelling to Japan is undeniable, and that ski season is the most common appeal for a first visit.

“In our store, Japan is the second highest destination enquiry – it appeals to many different types of travellers, especially the thrill seekers and the foodies!” Ms Thompson said.

“It’s becoming cheaper to travel to – Jetstar often have sales for $350 return! – especially for the snow fans, and areas like Osaka and Kyoto appeal to history and culture lovers too.”

“We field most enquiries for travellers wanting to head over in either February and March for ski season, or later in the season so they can also catch the cherry blossoms,” she said.

With Prince Hotels offering a number of ski resorts in Japan, including New Furano Prince Hotel in Hokkaido, Naeba Prince Hotel in Niigata, and Shizukuishi Prince Hotel in Iwate, Prince Hotels and Resorts Director Executive Managing Officer Mr. Ryuichiro Nishiyama said he is thrilled to see more Australians recognising Japan as a must-do destination on their travel wish list, particularly during ski season.

“The growth of Australians visiting our properties between 2017 and 2018 is a positive indication for the wider Japanese tourism market and we look forward to welcoming more Australian guests to our properties over the 19/20 ski season.”

“Getting to Japan for ski season has never been easier for Australians, as Qantas are now doing seasonal flights direct from Australia to Sapporo, giving skiiers easier access and allowing them to enjoy the city of Sapporo as well as a visit to the amazing snow in Furano, Hokkaido.”

Renowned in the Japanese market for their high levels of service and hospitality, the Prince Hotels and Resorts portfolio caters for both business and leisure travelers and offers everything from premium rooms in the heart of buzzing Tokyo, along with their breathtaking snow resorts in the alps.
