Princess Anne Retraces Her Father’s Footsteps to Vanuatu

October 31, 2014 Destination Global No Comments Email Email

Princess Anne followed in the footsteps of her father this week, landing on the white sands of Vanuatu, as part of her southern hemisphere tour.

Today, Prince Philip is still worshiped by the people of Tanna’s Yaohnanen village, who believe that the Duke of Edinburgh is in fact a holy mountain spirit from ancient legends (images available through Getty Images, see below).

Their belief was further strengthened after the Prince joined Queen Elizabeth II on their official visit to Vanuatu in 1974.

The legend has passed down through generations and shrines dedicated to the Duke and adorned with his portrait can be seen by visitors to this day.

White Grass Ocean Resort on Tanna can organise bespoke tours for travellers eager to experience the ‘cargo cult’ firsthand, packages start at AUD$73 per person (VT6500).

In addition to this international reputation, the remote island of Tanna is also home to one of the world’s most accessible volcanoes, Mount Yasur and is regarded as one of Vanuatu’s most popular outer islands, with a unique traditional custom, picturesque beaches and great trekking opportunities.

Beyond the Prince Philip shrine there are also many other Kastom villages which travellers are welcome to visit and learn about the culture of Vanuatu. For keen scuba divers, this activity will be available on the island from next year, adding another way to experience the diverse flora and fauna of the area.
