The highlight of the event was the traditional christening of the MS AmaReina by its honorary godmother, Princess Heide von Hohenzollern, of Germany.

Amid a chorus of cheers and applause, the Alps Artillery, a team of Bavarian riflemen, lined up to fire their guns in a salute to the new state-of-the-art river cruise ship as she arrived for her special event.  The Princess then christened the MS AmaReina in the time-honored tradition, breaking a bottle of Champagne against the ship’s hull before signing the town’s ceremonial ‘Golden Book’.

APT owner Geoff McGeary delivered a speech in which he thanked the Princess Heide, the Mayor of Vilshofen and other esteemed guests for their continued support of APT’s European river cruise programs:

APT CEO, Chris Hall was also present and gave his thanks to travel trade partners in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, as well as APT Club guests who travelled to Vilshofen to join the VIPs for the special Christening Cruise.

Other highlights included a special blessing of the ship by a local pastor and a performance by soprano Heidelinde Schmidfrom the Bavarian State Opera.

The tradition of christening a ship originated more than 4,000 years ago. A respected and well-known woman is selected to serve as a new ship’s honorary ’godmother’, entrusted with blessing the vessel to ensure the safety of its passengers and crew.

The MS AmaReina’s godmother, Princess Heide von Hohenzollern, and her family are custodians of the German castle, Burg Namedy, located in Andernach on one of the most picturesque areas of the Rhine. The family has worked hard over the years to restore Burg Namedy to its former glory, with the Princess personally overseeing a program of events that has transformed the castle into a centre of cultural activity.

The Princess has worked in close partnership with APT, granting its guests exclusive access to Burg Namedy as part of its ‘Royal Collection’ European river cruise program.

One of APT’s Concerto class river ships, the MS AmaReina, a sister ship to the MS AmaSonata (2014), is a deluxe 164-feet passenger vessel that incorporates innovative design features such as Twin Balconies (an APT exclusive) and spacious Owner’s Suites that measure up to 350 sq. feet. Guests travelling on APT’s Royal Collection cruises aboard the MS AmaReina in 2014 will also enjoy Chaîne des Rôtisseurs culinary creations with unlimited fine wine and beer, a choice ofdining venues, a heated pool with swim-up bar, massage and beauty salon, fitness studio, and complimentary in-room Internet, Infotainment and Wi-Fi. The MS AmaReina even carries a fleet of bicycles on board, including electric bicycles, so guests can enjoy Europe’s picturesque riverside bike paths on their own.
