Productivity Growth Will Boost Tourism

The accommodation industry has endorsed the approach to boosting productivity which has been outlined by union leader Paul Howes.

The Accommodation Association of Australia says Mr Howes’ vision of business and unions forging closer working relationships for the benefit of the broader economy is a sound one.

“Paul Howes deserves credit for opening the door to more meaningful and productive dialogue between employers and unions and he deserves credit for this,” said the Association’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Munro.

“Tourism has been identified as one of Australia’s growth sectors and to realise this potential, we need the best and most productive workers.

“On this basis, the Accommodation Association is keen to work with any industrial group which is prepared to listen to the thousands of employers in our industry, many who are running small businesses.”

Mr Munro said he is pleased that Mr Howes has indicated that taking extreme, ideological positions on workplace laws is becoming outdated and is detrimental to what employers and unions want to achieve.

“The Accommodation Association does not support the abolition of penalty rates,” Mr Munro said.

“However, given the 24/7 nature of the tourism and accommodation industries, having penalty rates apply on top of penalty rates, as is currently the case on public holidays, is having a severe negative impact on both businesses and workers.

“Penalty rates applying on top of penalty rates has directly resulted in some accommodation businesses having to close their restaurants on public holidays, which is a less than ideal outcome for the businesses concerned, their workers and international and domestic visitors.”
