PromPeru gains recognition for promoting Peru as a top tourism destination

PromPeru’s work to solidify Peru as a top international tourist destination and increase tourism arrivals to the country has been recognised through a variety of accolades granted to the tourist board.

Best Office of Tourism of South America

PromPeru was recently crowned the “Best Office of Tourism of South America” for the third consecutive year in the World Travel Awards-Edition Central and South America.

Known as “the Oscars of the tourism industry”, the World Travel Awards-Edition Central and South America seeks to celebrate and recognise companies, brands and destinations of excellence in the industry. The awards are the result of the feedback of industry members and the general public, bringing the tourism board recognition for strong results in tourism.

PromPeru succeeded in strengthening the country’s commercial channels and provided support to tourism businesses through strategic alliances in advertising, training and successful advertising campaigns.

Peru, Empire of Hidden Treasures Campaign

Launched in August 2012, the “Peru, Empire of Hidden Treasures” campaign was created to promote inbound tourism to Peru. The campaign featured a series of short Peruvian “movies”, presented in a film-type format. The films aim to captivate, excite and attract foreign visitors to Peru and with the tag-line, “don’t watch the movie live it for real.”

In 2012, the campaign was rolled out in 12 countries, including the United Kingdom, Chile, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. More than 245 million people are predicted to have viewed the campaign by 2013, when it will be rolled out in China and Japan.

In April, 2013, the “Peru, Empire of Hidden Treasures” campaign was the winner of the category Alimara Cataluña in the Alimara awards at the International Tourism in Catalonia Exhibition (SITC). This category rewards tourism promotion in Catalan and is organised jointly with the Government of Catalonia.

Peru recognised in TripAdvisor

PromPeru’s positioning of Peru as a top international holiday spot has led to increased awareness and recognition for Peru in virtual tourism forums.

TripAdvisor recently chose Machu Picchu as the top landmark destination in the world in its Traveller’s Choice Awards 2013. 10 Peruvian sites also appeared in TripAdvisor’s list of the top 25 most famous destinations in South America, and 5 Peruvian attractions were listed in the top 10.

New tourism stand design awarded

PromPeru’s new stand design won the best stand of the America and the Caribbean sector in the most esteemed tourism event in the world, ITB. These prizes are awarded by the Cologne Business School, with Peru coming ahead of 36 countries in the region.

The World Travel Market 2012 also saw PromPeru’s new stand design chosen as “Best stand for doing business” by the judges of the organisation. This year, the stand will be showcased at more than 19 international tourism fairs in America, Europe, Asia and Oceania.

Tourism growth in Peru

According to the WTO (World Tourism Organisation), the growth of tourism in Peru is exceeding the world average. Following the arrival of 2.8 million international tourists in Peru in 2012, Peru announced a tourism growth of 8.5%, compared to the world average of 3.9%. Tourism arrivals generated USD$3.232 in Peru for 2012, an 11% increase from 2011. By 2015, PromPeru aims to exceed 3.2 million tourist arrivals per year, generating USD$4.302 per annum.
