Qantas and EL AL share codes to HK, Thailand, S Africa

August 15, 2017 Headline News No Comments Email Email

Qantas has applied to the International Air Services Commission (IASC) to begin a code-share agreement with EL AL Israel Airlines on the Hong Kong, Thailand and South Africa routes from next month.

In an application to the IASC last week, Qantas stated: “As part of a code share agreement between Qantas and El Al Airlines (EL AL), it is proposed that EL AL will offer code share services on flights operated by Qantas on the Hong Kong, Thailand and South Africa routes from 4 September 2017.

“A copy of the confidential code share agreement between Qantas an EL AL will be provided separately to the Commission.”

The code share will let customers of both airlines book on select flights operated by the other, as well as earn and redeem frequent flyer points.  The partnership focuses on linking Qantas’ flights between Australia and Asia to EL AL flights between Asia and Israel’s financial centre and technology hub, Tel Aviv.  It will also connect Qantas’ flights from Sydney to Johannesburg with EL AL services from Tel Aviv to the South African city.

Qantas International chief executive Gareth Evans said Te Aviv was a popular destination for the many Australians with family and friends in Israel, “including a lot of Qantas frequent flyers who we know will welcome the option to book with us.

“The timing’s especially good when you think about the growing number of Australian companies doing business with Israel’s world-class technology and start-up sectors.”

EL AL president and chief executive David Maimon said Australia was a growing destination for Israelis, “especially from the business and tourism segments and we are here to answer their needs”.

EL AL plans to add its code to Qantas services that operate between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Hong Kong; between Sydney and Bangkok; and between Sydney and Johannesburg.

Reciprocal lounge access will be available for eligible customers of both airlines in Tel Aviv, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Hong Kong. Eligible customers will also be able to access lounges available to Qantas customers in Bangkok and Johannesburg.

El Al is Israel’s national carrier, established in 1948 alongside the State of Israel. It offers more non-stop flights than any other airline to/from Israel. EL AL flies to 36 destinations non-stop from Israel and serves hundreds of other destinations throughout the world via partnerships with many other carriers. This year, EL AL will receive the first of 16 B787 Dreamliners as it launches a fleet renewal program.

EL AL has long been considered one of the world’s most secure airlines, thanks to its stringent security procedures.

“At least two undercover air marshals are on board every EL AL flight,” CNN reported in 2002. “They sit among the passengers dressed in plain clothes. They are armed and licensed to shoot and kill.”
