As the Queen’s Baton Relay passes the halfway point of the international sector, we celebrate the incredible way in which it’s connecting the Gold Coast to the entire Commonwealth.

With 240 days to go until the Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018, the QBR is creating excitement for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) and giving a third of the world’s population the chance to be part of its history-making journey.

Since leaving Buckingham Palace on 13 March, the Queen’s Baton has engaged with hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren from the 130 schools it has visited across Africa, the Caribbean and the America’s.

It’s been in the hands and homes of 122 Presidents, Governor General’s, Prime Minister’s and Heads of State in an all too rare opportunity to bring the Gold Coast, Queensland and Australia into their world.

So far, it has been relayed by more than 280 high profile sports stars from across the 37 countries it has journeyed too. Athletes who are household names in their towns and cities, their achievements at past Commonwealth and Olympic Games still igniting pride with their people.

Last week it attended a Canadian Football League match in Alberta, Canada between the Edmonton Eskimos and the B.C Lions. Cheered on by the 38,000 strong crowd, with a further 3 million watching at home, the QBR continues to find ways to engage with the whole Commonwealth, symbolising the power and reach the Queen’s Baton has.

On its mission to unite the modern and diverse Commonwealth of today, the GC2018 QBR is on route to achieving two records; the longest relay ever and the most accessible to date.

Showing leadership in sustainability continues to be a priority, with consideration given to ensure the Relay leaves positive economic, environmental, social and community legacies.

Today in Guyana, 16,000 kilometers away from the Gold Coast, the Baton is rounding out it’s time in the America’s region, it will travel to the Falkland Islands next before heading across the Atlantic Ocean to England, Scotland and Wales.
