Queenstown Airport’s top 5 summer travel tips

1.          MAKE A LIST AND CHECK IT TWICE: Make a travel list for you and your family to ensure you don’t forget anything.

 2.          AIRPORT DROP-OFFS/PICKUPS & PARKING OPTIONS:  Consider your transport options to the airport.  It’s easy to get caught up in the rush, rush, rush of the holidays but the roads around the region will be particularly busy between 20 December and 4 January so please allow extra travel time, particularly if you’re catching a domestic flight.  Here are some tips for making travel easy:

¾       BUS TO FLY: Leave the car at home this summer and use Orbus. The new $2 buses run to and from Queenstown Airport regularly from 6.00am until midnight and pull-up right outside the terminal. To get the $2 fares grab a GoCard ($5 one-off fee) from the Tourism@Queenstown desk at the airport (near the baggage carousel), on the bus itself or at the O’Connells Mall service desk in town.

¾       DROP-OFFS – Bribe a friend or family member to drop you off at the airport in the free 2-minute (P2) public drop-off zone.  Please remember that this area is expressly for a ‘pash and dash’, so anyone wanting a lingering goodbye should use the carpark.

¾       FREE 20 MINUTE PARKING – Free 20-minute public pick-up and drop-off parking is available in the terminal car park.

¾       TERMINAL PARKING – Don’t forget that you can now Tap ‘n’ Go (pay by credit or debit card) in and out of the terminal carpark rather than taking a ticket and queuing at the pay station.

¾       PARK AND RIDE: Located in Brookes Road, the Airport Park and Ride has up to 300 car parking spaces and is an affordable, convenient transport option for longer term stays.

3.          KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: There’s some great technology available to help you plan your travel and receive real-time updates:

¾        CHOICE APP: Plan your route to the airport and around the region via the new real-time Choice app. Visit the website or download the app at Google Play or the App Store.

¾        PLAN YOUR JOURNEY: Use tools like the NZTA journey planner and webcams and consider travelling at non-peak times. The AA Roadwatch highlights any road closures and incidents so you can plan your trip before you leave home or adapt your route while on the road

Ø  Track flights via the real time flight information displayed on the home page

Ø  Check for alerts which highlight weather-related disruptions to multiple flights, carparks nearing capacity and other essential public information, also posted on Queenstown Airport’s Twitter account @NZQN

Ø  Find out what facilities and services are available at the airport

¾        DOWNLOAD THE REVELANT AIRLINE APP:  Go paperless!  Apps are good for keeping your flight information in one place and receiving updates if anything changes.

4.          GET READY FOR PASSENGER PROCESSING AT THE AIRPORT:  The airport will be busy so allow plenty of time to complete all of the necessary passenger processing so you can sit back and relax:

¾        CHECK YOUR DOCUMENTATION: Speed up your check-in and international processing time by having your documents and completed forms at the ready.  If you have anything to declare, make sure it’s easily accessible. Passport. CHECK. Visas. CHECK. Credit Cards. CHECK. Currency. CHECK. Departure Forms. CHECK…

¾        PREPARE FOR SECURITY SCREENING: To help make the aviation screening process quick and smooth, have your electronic devices out, check there’s nothing in your pockets and, if you’re travelling internationally, that all your toiletries are under 100ml (the size of the container/bottle, not the amount that remains in the container/bottle) and in a plastic bag for inspection. If in doubt, visit the Aviation Security website

5.          RELAX: We have free WiFi at Queenstown Airport so download entertainment before your flight and then sit back and relax while you wait to be whisked away for the break. Alternatively browse our locally-sourced and made retail and food and beverage offerings while you wait and grab a last minute Christmas gift for that special someone.

Happy travelling from all of us at Queenstown Airport!
