Snowmaking at The Remarkables ski area in Queenstown has started ahead of schedule as the country gears up for what’s set to be a great start to winter, with The Remarkables on target to open on June 20.
A huge dump of natural snow earlier this week combined with low temperatures has provided a great opportunity to fire up the snow guns early and start building a fantastic snow base for the 2015 season.
Ski area manager Ross Lawrence said snowmaking had started early.
“With the snow we’ve already got on the ground and the temperatures we’ve been experiencing, it was too good an opportunity to miss,” he said.
“Mother Nature provided a good half a metre or more already, so the mountain is looking fantastic as we build towards opening on June 20.”
More snow is in the forecast for early next week.
It’s also full steam ahead for contractors working on the new base building. Teams are working 24/7 on the new building which will house world-class facilities and a state-of-the-art design.
