Questex, a leading global business information company, today announced more than 2,000 delegates from a record 73 countries attended its 2014 International Hotel Investment Forum (IHIF) in Berlin.

The event, which is now in its 17th year, featured more than 30 CEOs of major hotel companies from around the world as participants in discussions on the latest developments, trends and best practice in the global hospitality and travel industry.

Also in attendance at IHIF, which is the leading annual meeting place for the global hotel industry, were Ministers of Tourism and government delegations from 12 countries and leadership of the United Nations World Tourism Organization and the World Travel & Tourism Council.

Kerry C. Gumas, President & CEO of Questex, said, “Speakers and visitors to this year’s International Hotel Investment Forum had a decidedly optimistic outlook on hotel investment in the short term, particularly in Europe. The region is expecting to see a variety of hotel transaction activity this year and beyond across all segments, notably including a few portfolio deals that are up for sale.”

The industry’s positive outlook was captured in comments from a wide range of IHIF speakers:

  • “There’s a lot of growth to come in the global tourism market over the next 15-20 years. According to Goldman Sachs, 50 percent of that growth will be in emerging markets and 50 percent will be in developed markets. That’s a massive change for the hotel and tourism sector to get its head around.” David Fenton, senior economist, Royal Bank of Scotland
  • “We’re growing faster in Europe than we are in the United States right now. We see a lot of opportunity in the branded boutique, select-service, business-oriented hotels in Europe.” Jim Abrahamson, president and CEO, Interstate Hotels & Resorts
  • “We’re active in Europe and we have a good feeling for the markets and places where we want to invest.” Jim Risoleo, EVP and managing director Europe, Host Hotels & Resorts
  • Stephanie Ricca, Editor-in-Chief of Questex Hotel Investment News, said, “It’s a good time to be in the hotel investment community. Representatives from tourism ministries from around the world shared region-specific hotel investment trends for everywhere from Europe and Asia to Brazil to Africa. At the same time, economists, executives, industry leaders and market forecasters shared data showing travel demand around the world is trending in a positive direction.”
